Jim's Page

From Jim's Daughter

It is with a very heavy heart that I type this update as I'm sure that many of you who have been checking this page for updates on my Dad's condition, felt like I did--that Jim Carter would beat cancer. Yesterday we received the call that we knew was coming, yet we were dreading. He passed away in the early morning hours. He had been in hospice for two weeks, though during those two weeks, we were all heartened by the number of people who called and stopped by with an encouraging word and usually a story about camp. A week ago, while I was sitting in his room, he dictated the following and made me promise to post it on Jim's Page--for those that know him well, you will appreciate that he wanted everyone to know the Fall Report at Munsungan Hunting and Fishing Club. BIRD SEASON Bird hunting didn't end with the onset of deer season. Warm, bright days provided some of the best late season grouse hunting I've ever seen. It got so we would just go for a ride around 2:45 p.m. to see how many grose we could see by dark, normally quite a few. DEER SEASON With the lack of hunters there was a big question on what we would see for deer. After a pre-Thanksgiving snowstorm, we found we had deer. Although we didn't get the deer of the size we had last year. Several nice bucks were shot. And it appeared there is a fairly healthy heard to the northwest of us, with their migration pattern, they showed up right after Thanksgiving. My Dad was able to spend most of the fall at Munsungan with the help of so many good friends and longtime guests. We know this was the best medicine he could have received as his heart and soul belonged to his beloved camp and the North Maine Woods. We will have a Celebration of his life this spring at Munsungan Hunting and Fishing Club--I will post details once they are finalized on this site. In lieu of flowers, a tribute account has been established in his name for memorial contributions to The Nature Conservancy (#1109129) or donations may be made to Hospice of Aroostook. His obituary should appear in the 12/30 edition of the Bangor Daily News. I know many of you are wondering about what's to become of Munsungan Hunting and Fishing Club. It is my hope that Jim Carter's legacy in the North Maine Woods will continue with the running of these camps--we know that no one can replace him--his cooking or his story-telling--but we are going to try to do our best by him and his memory. To all who are reading this, thank you for your friendship, your patronage and your support of my Dad and Munsungan Hunting and Fishing Club. I know that my memories of him will thrive through the stories and continued friendships that began here. Please feel free to contact me at northernaggal@gmail.com. All my best, Hannah Carter

The Jim Carter Show

I have been overwhelmed with emails from my Dad's friends and guests. These emails have been a great comfort as I love to read people's stories and experiences with my Dad and at Munsungan. John Holyoke, the outdoor writer for the Bangor Daily News, dedicated his column in today's paper to Dad. I think you'll agree it captured him perfectly. Here is a link to the article: http://outthere.bangordailynews.com/2012/01/05/hunting/munsungan-wont-be-the-same-without-carter/ We haven't decided on a date for Dad's service yet, but believe it will be sometime in the beginning of May. I will post details here as soon as we have them. All my best for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year-- Hannah
