Lake Trout (Togue) Fishing in Maine

Munsungan Lake is considered one of the premier togue lakes in Maine. Because of its depth and feed available Lake trout here grow big. In the past ten years I have seen three taken that exceed 20 pounds, and, every summer I have several come into camps in the 10 to 15 pound range. This is a under fished species.

We normally catch togue as a by catch when fishing for other species. In the spring and early summer we get togue while trolling for salmon and trout. Early on while the water surface temperatures are still low they will hit streamers and lures. This can and does give quite a surprise to those trolling, because instead of jumping, they will head to bottom usually taking a lot of line with them.

The first time I trolled Munsungan in 1953 I caught my first togue. We were just coming into the big lake trolling when I got the hardest hit I had ever had, about twenty minutes later, and after a lot of coaching, I was admiring a BIG fish in the canoe. It was an eight pound togue- the largest fish I have ever caught.

Later in the summer togue can be taken either by trolling deep or by plug fishing with live bait. Last summer I had a group who caught three over ten pounds in one mornings fishing. Although the fishing isn’t as fast as spring trolling and fly fishing, this fish can and does provide some great action…And properly baked they also make a fine meal.

Picture below are the three Lake Trout taken that day. These were taken by a party of five while fishing around three hours. I am sure these young lads had some stories to tell their friends upon returning home.
